How do you know it’s time for wheel balancing?

  • The steering wheel shimmies at 55 to 70 mph.A shake that smooths out above or below that range is a classic balance problem.
  • You feel it in the seat.A vibration through the floor or seat usually points to the rear wheels.
  • You just got new tires or a repair.Every tire should be balanced when it’s mounted, and again after a flat repair.
  • The tires wear in scallops.Cupped, uneven wear that you hear as a hum is a sign of a long-running imbalance.
  • A wheel weight fell off.A clean spot on the rim where a small weight used to be is a giveaway.

Shake or pull?

Balancing, alignment or brakes?

They feel alike from the driver’s seat. A shake at speed is usually balance. A drift to one side is usually alignment. Anything that only happens when you brake is brakes.

Why does a wheel shake?

A wheel with a heavy spot shakes the whole front end. Fix it yourself, in a simplified picture.

A wheel with a heavy spot shakes at highway speed. A technician adds small weights opposite the heavy spot until the wheel spins true. A shake at speed is usually balance, so call (805) 745-1992.

The heavy spot is at 2 o’clock. Tap a number to clip a weight on the rim. Find the spot that stops the shake.

This is an illustration. The heavy spot and the weights are simplified.

Common questions about wheel balancing

Is balancing the same as alignment?

No. Balancing fixes a heavy spot in the wheel and tire. Alignment sets the angles of the wheels so the car goes straight. They can feel alike, so tell us what you notice and we’ll sort it out.

How often should wheels be balanced?

With every new tire, after a flat repair, and whenever the car starts to shake. There’s no magic mileage.

Will balancing fix a car that pulls to one side?

Usually not. Pulling points to alignment, tire pressure, or a worn part.

Can a vibration come from something else?

Yes. Bent wheels, worn suspension parts and brake problems can feel the same. We’ll check before we charge you for something that won’t fix it.
