How do you know it’s time for engine repair?

  • The check-engine light is on.A steady light means get it looked at soon. A flashing light means a misfire, and driving on it can ruin the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call us.
  • The temperature gauge climbs.Overheating can warp an engine in minutes. Shut it off and let it cool before you open anything.
  • It runs rough or hesitates.Shaking at idle, stumbling when you accelerate, or a loss of power usually has a cause we can find.
  • There are spots under the car.Dark brown or black is oil. Green, orange or pink is coolant. A small drip today is a big repair later.
  • You hear knocking, ticking or squealing.Engines tell you when something is wrong. A new noise is worth a phone call.

Steady or flashing?

A steady light means get it looked at soon. A flashing light means a misfire, and driving on it can ruin the catalytic converter. It could also be something as small as a loose gas cap, according to fueleconomy.gov.

What’s under my car?

Is that a leak?

Tap what the drip looks like. We’ll say what it often is and what to do next.

Oil is amber to black and slick. Coolant is green, blue, orange, pink or purple and thin. Red or pink and oily can be transmission or power steering fluid. Clear water near the passenger side is usually the A/C. Clear to light amber and slippery near a wheel could be brake fluid, so don’t drive with a soft pedal. Call (805) 745-1992 and tell us what you see.

Dash lights

What does that light mean?

Start with the color. Then tap the light you’re seeing. Your owner’s manual lists every light on your car.

The color tells you how urgent it is. Red means a potentially serious problem or safety issue. Yellow, amber or orange means service soon. Green or blue means a system is on. Red lights to take seriously include oil pressure, charging, temperature and brakes. Pull over safely, shut the engine off and call (805) 745-1992.

  • Yellow“Yellow/amber/orange mean something needs to be serviced or repaired soon.”
  • Green or blue“Green or blue is only telling you that a system is on or operating.”

When do you need it?

An engine has no service interval of its own. What protects it is the routine work: clean oil on time, healthy coolant, and the timing belt replaced on schedule if your engine has one. Some engines use a belt and some use a chain. Belts have a replacement interval and chains usually don’t, so look it up in your owner’s manual.

Typical ranges. Your owner’s manual and your driving decide the real number, and we’ll tell you what we see.

What does it cost?

Engine work runs from a small repair to a major one, and we can’t guess from a description. Call (805) 745-1992 to talk it through.

Common questions about engine repair

Is it safe to drive with the check-engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive it a short while to get it checked. If the light is flashing, or the car is shaking, losing power or overheating, stop driving and call us.

Do you work on trucks, 4x4s and motorhomes?

Yes. We work on cars, trucks, 4x4s, motorhomes and trailers. Motorhomes need a call ahead because space at the shop is limited. If it’s something unusual, call with the year, make and model and we’ll tell you whether we can help.

What does an engine repair cost?

It depends on what’s wrong, which is why we ask you to call or bring it by.

How do I know if my engine has a timing belt or a chain?

Your owner’s manual lists it. Belts need replacing at a set mileage, often 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Chains are usually left alone unless they start to make noise.

Can I keep driving if it’s leaking oil?

A slow seep can wait a few days if you check the level often and top it off. A steady drip or a low oil light means stop and call.

I’m just passing through Carpinteria. Can you help?

Call (805) 745-1992 first and tell us what it’s doing. We’ll tell you whether to bring it in and what to expect. We’re on Carpinteria Ave, and Carpinteria is right on Highway 101. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
