Car myths
True or false? Six things people say about cars.
Quick round. Each answer comes with where we got it. Your answers stay on your phone.
- You should let the engine idle for several minutes before you drive, even in a modern car. False. The U.S. Department of Energy says modern vehicles can be driven within seconds of starting, and the quickest way to warm an engine is to drive it gently.
- Premium gasoline makes any car run better. False. Unless your owner’s manual calls for it, premium usually gives no benefit over regular. Check the manual for what your engine needs.
- Fill your tires to the maximum pressure printed on the tire’s sidewall. False. The right pressure is the one the vehicle maker lists on the label in the driver’s door edge or in the owner’s manual, not the number on the tire.
- If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head when you put a penny in the tread, it’s time to replace the tire. True. That is NHTSA’s penny test. It means the tread is down to 2/32 of an inch.
- If the tire pressure light is off, your tires are fine. False. The light only warns when a tire is significantly low. NHTSA says it is not a substitute for checking pressure by hand every month.
- Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, at least once a month. True. NHTSA says to check all tires at least once a month, cold, meaning the car has not been driven for at least three hours.
