Battery

What should a battery read?

Slide the needle to the number your meter shows. We’ll say what it means.

Typical figures for a standard 12-volt car battery: about 12.6 volts or more when rested is a full charge, around 12.2 is about half, and 11.8 or below is empty. With the engine running, about 13.7 to 14.7 volts is normal. Call (805) 745-1992 if the car is slow to start.

Common questions about electrical repair

How do I tell if it’s the battery or the alternator?

A weak battery usually cranks slowly. A failing alternator often shows a battery light, dim lights, or a car that dies while running. A test tells for sure.

How long does a car battery last?

Commonly 3 to 5 years, depending on use and conditions.

Why does my car die overnight?

Something is draining the battery with the key off, or the battery can’t hold a charge.
