- It pulls to one side.On a flat road with your hands loosely on the wheel, the car drifts.
- The steering wheel is crooked. You’re driving straight and the wheel isn’t centered.
- The tires wear unevenly.Bald inside or outside edges are the classic sign.
- You hit a curb or a big pothole.Even a small hit can knock the wheels out of line.
- The steering feels loose or wanders. That can be a worn part, which has to be fixed before an alignment will hold.

Shake or pull?
Balancing, alignment or brakes?
They feel alike from the driver’s seat. A shake at speed is usually balance. A drift to one side is usually alignment. Anything that only happens when you brake is brakes.
| What you feel | Usually |
|---|---|
| Shakes in the steering wheel at highway speed | Wheel balancing |
| Vibrates through the seat or floor | Wheel balancing |
| Shakes only when I brake | Brake repair |
| Drifts to one side on a flat road | Alignment |
| Pulls only when I brake | Brake repair |
| The steering wheel is off-center | Alignment |
| Steering feels loose or wanders | Alignment |

Alignment
What does bad alignment do to a tire?
Slide the wheel out of line and watch where the wear goes.
A wheel that leans in loads the inside edge of the tire, and one that leans out loads the outside edge. A wheel that points slightly in or out scrubs sideways as it rolls and wears the tread across. Call (805) 745-1992 if your car drifts or the steering wheel is off-center.

Straight and square, the tread wears flat across.
Drawn exaggerated so you can see it. Real settings are tiny. An alignment sets them back to the maker’s settings. Look at your tire’s wear with Read your tire.

Common questions about alignment
How often should I get an alignment?
About once a year, with every new set of tires, and after a hit or any suspension work.
What’s the difference between alignment and balancing?
Alignment is the angle of the wheels. Balancing is the weight distribution of the wheel and tire. Both matter. We’ll tell you which your symptom points to.
Can you align a vehicle with worn parts?
Not for long. Worn ball joints or tie rods let the angles drift, so those get fixed first.
Can you align trucks, 4x4s and RVs?
It depends on the vehicle. Call with the year, make and model and we’ll tell you straight whether we can do it.
I’m just passing through Carpinteria. Can you help?
