- Squealing when you stop. Most pads have a small metal tab that squeals when the pad is getting low. It’s a warning, and you have a little time.
- Grinding.Metal on metal means the pad is gone and the rotor is being damaged. Come in right away.
- The pedal feels soft or goes low.Air or a leak in the system. If the pedal goes to the floor, don’t drive it. Pull over somewhere safe and call us.
- The car pulls when you brake.A stuck caliper or uneven wear can pull the vehicle toward one side.
- The steering wheel shakes when braking.Usually rotors that have worn unevenly.
- A brake light or burning smell.Don’t ignore either.

What happens when you press the pedal?
Press it and watch the pads close on the rotor. Then wear them down.
Pressing the pedal pushes brake fluid to the caliper. The caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor, the disc that turns with the wheel, and friction slows the car. When the pad material wears away, the metal behind it can rub the rotor, and that’s the grinding. Call (805) 745-1992 if you hear it.
Foot off the pedal: the pads sit a hair away from the rotor and the wheel turns freely.

How often do you need it?
Have the brakes looked at once a year, or every time the tires are rotated. Pads often last 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Expect less on a heavy truck, when towing, or in a lot of stop-and-go driving. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and many makers say to replace it every two to three years. Check your owner’s manual.
Typical ranges. Your owner’s manual and your driving decide the real number, and we’ll tell you what we see.
What does it cost?

Common questions about brake repair
Why do my brakes squeal?
Often it’s the wear tab on the pad, telling you it’s getting low. It can also be dust, glazed pads or missing hardware. A quick look will tell.
Is grinding dangerous?
Yes. Grinding usually means the pad material is gone. Stopping distance gets longer and the rotors get damaged, which makes the repair cost more.
Do I need new rotors every time I replace pads?
No. If the rotors are thick enough and smooth, they can be resurfaced or reused. If they’re worn thin or warped, replace them.
How long do brake pads last?
Typically 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Driving style, vehicle weight and towing change that a lot.
Should I change my brake fluid?
Many manufacturers call for it every two to three years because the fluid absorbs moisture. Ask us when you come in.
